Chaplaincy

As SJB’s chaplain, it is my privilege to work with students and staff on our life-long missions of building our relationship with God and with each other. I work with all staff to set the spiritual tone of our school community. My greatest hope is for each of our students to discover who God is calling them to be. It is my sincere hope that they will be happy, feel fulfilled and go on to help build our community and our world.

Regardless of where you are on your faith journey (and it is a journey that unfolds over a lifetime), we all wish to have a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives. By organizing school-wide Masses and prayer services, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, opportunities to work toward social justice, fundraisers and other events, I help students to learn about life and our world and to figure out their place within it.

Chaplains practise a ministry of presence, accompanying students and staff as they face the challenges of life, whether it be a matter of faith, problems in a relationship at school or at home, grief and loss, or just a bad day; we are here to listen and lend support. God bless you!

Any student who transfers to SJB from another school must complete an eligibility package. This must be submitted to the Co-Instructional Head (Mrs. Perri or Mrs. Pejic) once it is completed. You are not allowed to practice or play in any form of game until your eligibility has been approved so get it done early. This process includes both the HWCAA package and the OFSAA package, and can be found using the following link:

ESL - English Second Language

 

At SJB, we are a very welcoming and inclusive community that takes great pride in the rich cultural and linguistic diversity that is Brebeuf. We are happy to offer full ESL programming in order to meet the individual needs of each English Language Learner. The courses that we offer include ESL and ELD A through E and ESL Math, Science, History, Geography, Religion, Civics and Careers. By providing full ESL programming, our students have the opportunity to accelerate their language acquisition and successfully transition to mainstream classes.

We also have an ESL Support Office where our students can come at any time to get help with their schoolwork, pathways planning, personal support or just to talk about their day and practice their conversational skills. We also have YMCA settlement workers available 5 days a week who help our ELLs with a variety of supports. Our settlement workers speak Arabic, Assyrian, Spanish and Tagalog. They are available to help facilitate communication between parents, students and the school.

Here at SJB, our ELLs also have many opportunities to participate in fun activities that help enhance their high school experience, we even have an ESL representative on Student Council. Some past activities have included cooking club, movie club, leadership workshops, conversation circles, lunch and learn, out of school learning experiences, and most importantly our annual Culture fest that has been taking place for over a decade.

So, if English is not your first language, become a Brave and you will find tremendous support and opportunities to reach your learning potential at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary.

Physical Education

 

If you are interested in taking phys-ed courses at SJB, there are numerous options available that may appeal to you! We offer phys-ed courses that include a variety of SPORTS in grade 9 and 10 for girls and boys, and co-ed in grade 11 and 12. We offer FITNESS courses from grade 10-12 for girls and boys. We also offer co-ed FOCUS courses; basketball in grade 10 and 11, and soccer in grade 11. If you are interested in leadership and community building, we offer RECREATION AND LEADERSHIP course in grade 12. If you are interested in the human body and movement we also offer the KINESIOLOGY course in grade 12. See below for course codes and more information!

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

 

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry approved specialized program. The SHSM program allows students to focus on knowledge and skills that are of particular importance and to obtain certifications recognized in this SHSM sector as they work towards meeting the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students who graduate with this SHSM designation on their diploma are prepared for success in this SHSM sector and in the postsecondary destination of their choice, whether it apprenticeship training, a college or university program, or the workplace.

The following components, which are outlined in detail in the ministry-approved SHSM Sector Guide, are as follows:

1. A package of 8-10 required credits (Grade 11 and 12 courses).

2. Compulsory certifications and training including CPR Training, Standard First Aid, WHMIS and others specific to the sector.

3. Experiential learning and a minimum of 2 credits earned through cooperative education.

4. Reach ahead opportunities which allow students to experience learning in their intended postsecondary destination.

5. Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship (I.C.E.) Training.

This focused learning experience gives students the opportunity to explore, identify, and refine career goals and make informed decisions related to their postsecondary destination. Successful completion of the SHSM will be indicated on the Ontario Student Transcript and on the diploma.

Special Education Department

The Special Education (Resource) Department at St. Jean de Brebeuf provides services for those students who require instructional, environmental and assessment accommodations for various reasons. Students who require the supports of the Resource Department typically have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is a written plan that describes the special education program and/or services required by a particular student, based on a thorough assessment of the strengths and needs that affect the student’s ability to learn.

Students at a SJB Feeder School

If you are currently a student at a SJB feeder school, all of your information will be transferred over by your home school. A transition meeting is held in the spring with your school in order to discuss your current needs, and how to best assist with your transition to high school.

Student(s) Planning to Attend but NOT at a SJB Feeder School

If you are a student who is planning to attend SJB and are not attending one of our feeder schools, or are currently enrolled in another board, you will need to make an appointment with the Special Education Department as soon as possible. We will schedule a meeting to discuss your academic needs. At this meeting, you should provide the following documentation:

- A Your most recent IEP

- A copy of your Psychoeducational Assessment (if you have had one completed)

- Any medical documentation to support conditions(s) that might effect your academic progress

Student Services (Guidance)

Counsellors are assigned to a grade level and follow students to Graduation

Our primary role includes academic tracking, career counselling, post-secondary preparation for all pathways, and we facilitate a team approach with Administration, Student Success teachers, Special Education staff, all support groups which includes the school social worker, ESL staff, school nurse, Chaplain, Christian Service Animator, and all school staff to promote a “BE READY, BE PRESENT, BE BRAVE” life long learner.

PREPARATION FOR REGISTRATION, COURSE SELECTION AND TRANSITION

- We also have a Transitions Team comprised administration, guidance counsellors, Special Education Resource Teacher, and Student Success teachers who plan and prepare Orientation, Transition for Grades 7 to 10 activities and supports for high school. The purpose of this Team is to ensure that students are supported and successful in their transition to high school

- Grade 8 students from our Catholic Feeder Schools will receive all necessary Registration information throughout the school year

- If your child is from a Public Elementary School, we ask that you contact the school at your earliest convenience to inform us that your child would like to attend SJB (905-388-7020)

- Grade 8 teachers will make recommendations for course levels based on student achievement and, as parents/guardians, you will choose courses based on these recommendations and the knowledge of your child’s needs

- In the Grade 9 Course Selection guide you will find the diploma requirements as well as course descriptions and registration information. There is a sample of the grade 9 option sheet as well as a planning guide. Please use both for the planning of courses choices; the option sheet will be a rough draft. In January grade 8s will be required to hand in the pink option sheet (attached) that will be completed by the grade 8 teacher and then by the grade 8 student in conjunction with their parent or guardian.

- One of the requirements for graduation is 40 Christian Service Hours. Grade 8s may begin accumulating Christian Service Hours as of July the year they start grade 9 in September

- Passport to Grade 9 is a two-day orientation program aimed at alleviating the stressors around the first week of school. We practice opening your locker, finding classes and grade 8s will have the run of the school for two days at the end of August. It’s a great way to ease into grate 9.
