October is Cyber Security Awareness Month!
Throughout the month of October, schools across Ontario are highlighting the importance of staying safe online. The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, in partnership with the Educational Computing Network of Ontario (ECNO) and the Ministry of Education, will be sharing weekly themes and resources to help students, staff, and families build healthy online habits.
Week #1
Cyber Safety Basics — This week’s focus includes learning how to protect personal information, recognize online risks, and use digital tools responsibly.
Week #2
Healthy Relationships — This week’s focus includes tips for maintaining a healthy relationship with technology, strategies to manage screen time and digital distractions, and guidance on setting online boundaries to protect your overall well-being.
We encourage all members of our Brébeuf community to take a few minutes to explore the following resources and discuss them at home and in the classroom.
Week #3
Artificial Intelligence - This week’s resources help students and families better understand the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in our daily lives. They explore what generative AI is, how it’s used, and the potential risks associated with it.
Parents and students will also learn how to identify AI-generated content, recognize online disinformation, and understand how fraudsters may use AI for scams. These interactive videos and guides provide practical tips to stay informed, think critically, and use technology safely and responsibly both in and outside of school.
Week #4
Social Media and Gaming - This week's resources promotes safe and respectful online behaviour in social media and gaming, outlining risks such as addiction, cyber-bullying, and privacy concerns. It offers strategies for positive digital citizenship—like setting limits, choosing healthy content, and managing screen time—and provides families with guidance to support balanced, responsible online habits.
