Sleep & Screen Time: Supporting Healthy Habits at SJB

At St. Jean de Brébeuf CSS, we remain committed to supporting the academic success, mental health, and overall well-being of our students. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote strong attendance and healthy routines, we are sharing important information from the Ontario Health and Peer Relations Study (HPRS) regarding sleep and screen time.

Research continues to show a clear connection between nighttime device use and student fatigue. When students are not well-rested, it can impact their focus, mood, emotional regulation, and school attendance.

What the Data Shows

  • Students in Grades 4–8 were significantly more likely to report feeling too tired to attend school if they used electronic devices before bed .

  • In Grades 9–12, 1 in 5 students (21%) who used devices before bed reported missing school because they felt too tired .

Sleep is foundational to students’ learning, behaviour, and overall well-being .

How Families Can Help

Simple routines can make a meaningful difference:

  • Turn off devices at least one hour before bedtime

  • Store phones, tablets, and laptops away from the bed overnight

  • If fatigue is impacting attendance, consider limiting nighttime access to devices
