Josh Omojafo: SJB to NCAA D1 Basketball
Former Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board student Josh Omojafo is making headlines as a senior guard for the University of South Florida Bulls in the American Conference. Standing 6’5 and hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Omojafo’s journey began at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Elementary school to St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic Secondary High School, where he excelled in basketball, football, track and was an Honour Roll student. Josh earned a full basketball scholarship to attend NCAA DII Gannon University in Erie, PA.
At Gannon, Omojafo became a Division II standout, averaging 20 points per game in 2023-24 and leading his team to an Elite Eight appearance. His performance earned him multiple All-America honours and a spot on the prestigious Bevo Francis Top 50 Watch List, an accomplishment he credited to the values and time-management skills learned during his HWCDSB years.
After transferring to NCAA Division I Robert Morris University in 2024, Omojafo surpassed 1,000 career points and helped secure a Horizon League Championship, being named to the tournament all-star team. His team earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament playing against the University of Alabama.
Now in his Sr year at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL, Josh is thriving as a starter averaging nearly 17.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting over 53% from the field and 81% from the foul line.
“Josh always had set measurable goals for himself and demonstrated incredible work ethic, focus and consistency” said his former teacher, Mr. Welsh. “He is determined to succeed in Basketball and academics, and his journey should be inspiring to other student-athletes in the HWCDSB.”
Omojafo emphasizes that his family and his strong faith remain the foundation of his success, reminding young athletes that discipline in the classroom and trust in God are just as important as performance on the court.
